Shane Dwight’s ‘This House’ so good it’s scary

Dwight was musically inspired by Albert King’s blues guitar tone but he was raised on a horse ranch in Morgan Hill, Calif., immersed in country music of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams.
A prolific songwriter, Dwight has always made music that straddles a fence between blues and country rock,…

He looked as out of place among his classroom peers as he might be working for a corporation-owned record company. Such a notion makes Bob…

Thunderbirds promo

The Fabulous Thunderbirds might be considered soul, R&B or even Americana, but there is no question that its longtime bandleader, Kim Wilson, is a product of the blues.

Mentored  by George “Harmonica” Smith, Wilson when he started out in Southern California was known as “Goleta Slim.” He went to Austin, Texas where he became the leader of  Antone’s house band, often supporting Muddy Waters.…

Yonder Mountain String Band, a vanguard in the progressive bluegrass world, has been making fans smile and dance since 1998, and such was the case April 3 in the MontBleu Theatre. The venerable showroom will filled with an enthusiastic, appreciative and, as in typical bluegrass fashion, exceedingly polite.  “Everybody was jacked up,” said Kurt Johnson, who filed his first batch of photos for Tahoe Onstage. The audio mix was excellent, Johnson added. The quartet from Nederland, Colo. also known as YMSB played two sets after a rousing opening set from Brothers Comatose. The “Jimmy Page of mandolin,” Jeff Austin added a strong dose of charisma with his musicianship, along with the personable upright bassist Ben Kaufmann, guitarist Adam Aijala and banjoist Dave Johnston.

Editor’s note: Photographer Kurt Johnson is a 10-year Lake Tahoe resident who plays drums for the band Mudd Bonz.
